About Us

The Ram Inn is a friendly country pub and B&B located in the heart of a quaint town near Lewes in Firle. At the bar you will find artists, walkers, writers, farmers, farriers and vicars, at weekends the garden is usually filled with families and children of all ages. We have built a reputation for really good local food as well as locally produced cask ales and also have five beautiful bedrooms and offer bed & breakfast all year round.

Our Story

Our quintessentially beautiful English village is a quiet backwater off the main A27 within the South Downs National Park. The main street peters out at the top of the village where the downs begin to rise more steeply and this, along with the lack of through traffic, street lights and road markings give the village a timeless quality. Belonging to the Firle estate, home of the Gage family, the Ram sits at the centre of the village and an easy stroll from Firle Place, the cricket ground, village Post Office and St Peters church. The beauty of the village and surrounding countryside has attracted artists & writers for generations. The writer Virginia Woolf moved to Firle in 1910 and her sister, the painter and designer Vanessa Bell lived at Charleston Farmhouse which became a favourite haunt of the Bloomsbury group.

With easy access to over 100 miles of walking and cycling along the South Downs way, we are a perfect stop off point. For the less adventurous, there are circular walks to suit everyone from the pub.

Our History

The Ram Inn has been at the heart of the vibrant farming community of Firle for over five hundred years. The rambling old brick and flint building has three main rooms, each with its own open fire lit every day between October and April. The old stable and coach house have been converted into a private dining room and outside ‘farmers bar’, and our splendid flint-walled garden is perfect for peaceful summer supping under the greengage trees.
